Ed Ruscha
Artist b.1937 (USA)
Ed Ruscha he’s is an American artist associated with the pop art movement. He has worked in the media of painting, printmaking, drawing, photography, and film. Ed Ruscha lives and works in Culver City, California. He started to work as a commercial artist, painting signs and creating graphic designs. As a consequence, he began to apply commercial techniques and iconic styles to his artwork. He began to render words and images in the hard-edge style of advertising design. Later he experimented with painting words as if they had been written by using poured liquids. In the 1980s Ruscha made work in the technique of grisaille in which images and texts, often as silhouettes, were softened and blurred. In the ’90s he featured the rugged mountain scenery often used in contemporary advertising for motor vehicles. Ed Ruscha is renewed for his viewpoint of consumerism in life and art and his artwork are exhibited worldwide.
